Tardive dyskinesia is a potentially permanent disorder caused by the neuroleptic drug Reglan® (generic name: metoclopramide).

Patients with tardive dyskinesia suffer prolonged, involuntary muscle movements which can cause contortions and sudden movements of the muscles of the face, mouth, jaw, tongue, eyes, neck, shoulders, torso, larynx, diaphragm, arms, legs, feet, and hands. Taking the drug longer than the 12-week treatment approved by the FDA may cause tardive dyskinesia or other neurological conditions including restless leg syndrome.

On February 26, 2009, the FDA announced that manufacturers of metoclopramide must add a black box warning to their drug labels to warn about the risks associated with its use.

What is the Treatment for Tardive Dyskinesia?

There is no known standard treatment for tardive dyskinesia. People who develop the condition will require ongoing, complicated treatment and may become physically and vocationally disabled.

Tardive dyskinesia can affect people of all ages.

The Connection Between Infant Tardive Dyskinesia and Reglan®:

Many infants suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, also known as GERD. GERD can be painful for babies and prevent them from getting the necessary nutrition to grow. Some doctors prescribe Reglan® for infants with GERD although this drug has not been approved by the FDA for use in children. Many doctors lack the proper training to recognize the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia and even those with training find it difficult to diagnose in infants. Infants who develop tardive dyskinesia will likely need treatment for this difficult condition the rest of their lives.
